Landing page error due to lack of record visibility (sharing)

Symptoms

An error message, "Sorry, an error occurred," will appear on the landing page, and the survey will not be recorded in Salesforce.

If you have organization-wide sharing defaults of Private, you can grant access to Simple Survey one of two ways.  
 
The easiest way to accomplish this, and grant full access to Simple Survey, is to bypass sharing and security by checking this option under Optional Setup in the Simple Survey Setup Wizard.

The second way is to define sharing rules that gives the Simple Survey Site Guest User access to records it does not own.
 
Sharing rules represent the exceptions to your organization-wide default settings. If you have organization-wide sharing defaults of Private or a particular Object set to private, you can define rules that give additional users access to records they do not own. 

To do this set up a public group for Simple Survey Site Guest User and add read-only sharing rules to the three required objects and any other object linked to the Survey object (if the sharing model for that particular object is set to private).

First, create a public group:
  1. Go to Setup | Administer | Manage Users | Public Groups.
  2. Click "New".
  3. Enter a Label Name.
  4. Ensure the "Grant Access Using Hierarchies" check box is left checked.
  5. In the Search drop down menu, select Users.
  6. Add "User:  Simple Survey Site Guest User" to the Selected Members column.
  7. Click "Save".

Then:
  1. Go to Setup | Administer | Security Controls | Sharing Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Account Sharing Rules and click "New".
    • Step 1: Enter a Label Name.
    • Step 2: Select the Rule Type "Based on record owner".
    • Step 3: Select the Public Group "All Internal Users".
    • Step 4: Select the Public Group you created for the Simple Survey Site Guest User.
    • Step 5: Give Read Only access for Default Account, Contract and Asset Access, leave Opportunity Access Private and grant Read Only access to Case.

Repeat Sharing Rules steps for Contact and Case Objects if they are set to Private as well as any other custom object linked to the Survey object which is also currently set to private for sharing.
